Tailor your resume to a job description, free

Two free ways: check your résumé against the posting here, or copy a prompt into ChatGPT or Claude that tells it not to invent anything. Below them, one résumé tailored change by change.

Check your résumé against the posting

Add your résumé and paste the job description. You get the posting’s key words, each marked by whether your résumé uses it, plus an ATS score and three fixes. No sign-up.

Free, no sign-up. Your résumé is read once and not stored.

A free prompt for ChatGPT or Claude

Most tailoring prompts ask the AI to “make my résumé match the job”, and it does, by adding skills you don’t have. This one forbids that, lists your gaps separately, and leaves [X] where you need to fill in a number.

You are helping me tailor my résumé to one job posting.

Rules:
1. Use only facts that are already in my résumé below. Do not add any skill, tool, employer, job title, date, number or result that is not in it.
2. If the job asks for something my résumé does not show, list it under "Gaps". Do not write it into the résumé.
3. Where a number would make a line stronger but my résumé has none, write [X] for me to fill in. Never guess a number.

Do this, in order:
A. List the 10 most important requirements in the job description. Mark each one Required or Preferred.
B. For each requirement, quote the line of my résumé that shows it, or write "Not shown".
C. Rewrite up to 5 of my bullet points so they use the job description's own words for work I really did. Show each as Before / After / Which line of my résumé it came from.
D. Write my Skills line again with the job's required skills that I have listed first.
E. List the Gaps, so I can decide what to learn or what to explain in an interview.

One résumé, tailored change by change

Sneha, a B.Tech CSE 2025 fresher, applying for Associate Software Engineer at Ledgerline. Every new word came from somewhere else on her own résumé.

  • Skills line

    Before
    Java · Python · React · Node.js · SQL
    After
    Node.js · SQL · React · Docker · Java · Python
    Why
The posting’s must-haves move to the front. Docker was already in her final-year project, so it joins the list.
  • Internship bullet

    Before
Worked on various backend tasks during the internship
    After
Wrote the test suite for Quayside’s orders payment API during a six-month internship
    Why
“the tests for the orders payment API” came from her own summary.
  • Oracle Java certification

    Before
    Not on her résumé
    After
    Still not on her résumé
    Why
Another posting asked for it. She doesn’t have it, so it is shown to her as a gap and never written in.

Sneha is a sample person; her résumé is the one the BananaJobz home page is told through.

How to tailor it by hand

  1. 01

Read the posting for its required skills

Most postings split Required from Preferred. The required ones, in the posting’s own spelling, are what a recruiter searches for.

  2. 02

Find where your résumé already shows each one

A project, an internship, a course. If a skill is buried in a project description, put it in your skills line too.

  3. 03

Use their words for work you really did

If they say “REST APIs” and you wrote “backend endpoints”, say REST APIs. Same work, the word they search for.

  4. 04

Move the most relevant lines up

Reorder skills and bullets so the matches come first. A recruiter reads the top third most closely.

  5. 05

Leave the gaps out, and know them

A skill you don’t have stays off the page. Expect to be asked about it, and have an honest answer ready.

Questions

Can I tailor my resume with ChatGPT or Claude for free?

Yes. Paste the prompt above with the job description and your résumé into the free version of either. Check every line it gives back against what you really did; chatbots add skills you never mentioned unless told not to, and sometimes even then.

Is tailoring a résumé the same as lying?

No, as long as every line is true. Tailoring changes which true things come first and which words describe them. Adding a skill you do not have is lying, and an interviewer will usually find it.

How many keywords should my résumé match?

There is no score that guarantees a call; any tool that names one is guessing. Cover the required skills you really have, in the posting’s spelling, and do not stuff in the ones you lack.

Do I need a new résumé for every job?

Keep one master résumé and make a tailored copy per posting. For jobs that ask for the same things, the same copy works. Name each file for the role so you can find it again.

Does BananaJobz tailor résumés for free?

Yes, 5 tailored résumés a month on the free plan, and redoing the same job again that month does not count twice. It uses only what is on your résumé.

Skip the copy and paste

BananaJobz finds jobs that fit your résumé and tailors a copy for each one with the same rule as the prompt: nothing your résumé doesn’t already say. You edit it and download the PDF. 5 tailored résumés a month are free.
