How to ask for a later joining date
Early, with one reason and a specific new date, and a line that you are still coming. Write it below.
Three rules
1
Ask the day you know
The earlier you ask, the easier it is to say yes. A request a week before joining is a problem; three weeks before is a conversation.
2
One reason, one date
A notice period, a relieving letter, an exam, a move. And a specific date, never “a few weeks”: it shows you have a plan.
3
Say you are still coming
The real worry on their side is that you will not join at all. One line that you are committed answers it.

Joining date for the [Role] role: [Your name]
Dear Hiring Team, I am looking forward to joining [Company] as [Role]. I am writing to ask whether my joining date could move from [current joining date] to [new date]. I am fully committed to joining, and I am happy to complete any paperwork or pre-joining tasks before then. I am sorry for the change, and I understand if this needs a conversation; I am happy to call. Regards, [Your name]

Questions people ask
Can a company withdraw the offer if I ask?
It is rare for a short, well-reasoned extension asked early. It becomes a risk when the delay is long, vague or repeated. If the date matters a lot to them, they will tell you, and you can decide.
Should I call or email?
Call your HR contact if you can, then send the email so the new date is in writing. Ask for a revised offer letter or a written confirmation of the new date.
My current employer will not release me early. What do I tell the new one?
The truth, in one line, with the date your notice period ends. Many companies are used to Indian notice periods and would rather wait than lose a hire.
