Resume for an internship, with no experience

You are not expected to have worked anywhere yet. An internship résumé shows what you have started: projects, college roles, a course you used. Here is the order, what counts, and two full samples.

What goes on it, top to bottom

One page, one column, in this order.

  1. 01

    Name and contact

City, email, phone, and GitHub or LinkedIn if they have something on them.

  2. 02

    Two-line summary

Your year and degree, the internship you want, three skills, and one thing you did.

  3. 03

    Education

Degree with expected graduation year and CGPA so far, then Class XII. Class X only if asked.

  4. 04

    Skills

Grouped, eight or so, each one backed by a project or course below.

  5. 05

    Projects

Your experience section. Two or three, each with what it is, what you did and what came of it.

  6. 06

    Positions, activities, certifications

Clubs, fests, hackathons, volunteering, a course with a project. Whatever shows you doing something.

What counts when you have no experience

  • A college or class project, even a group one, if you say what your part was
  • A hackathon, case competition or quiz, whatever the result
  • Running a club event, a fest team or a college page
  • Helping with a family business: billing, stock, the shop’s Instagram
  • Freelance or unpaid work for a real person: a website, a logo, tutoring
  • An online course, if you built something with it

Questions students ask

Can I apply for an internship with no experience?

Yes. Internships are meant for people without experience. What the recruiter wants to see is that you have started: a project, a club role, a course you used. That is what the résumé is for.

Should an internship résumé be one page?

Yes, always, for a student. If it runs over, cut Class X, older certificates and the weakest project.

Should I put my CGPA?

Yes. Most internship forms ask for it anyway. Write “CGPA 7.6 (first four semesters)” so it is clear the degree is still going.

What if I have no projects at all?

Make one small one before you apply, in the field of the internship. A weekend project you can explain beats an empty section. Then use the club, fest or family-business work you already have.

Do I need a cover letter for an internship?

Often it is optional, which is why a short one stands out. Four sentences are enough: what you study, the internship, one thing you did, why this company.
