How to write a project description in your resume

For a fresher, projects are the experience section. Each one needs a heading and three lines: what it is, what you did, and what came of it. Write yours below, or start from an example for your branch.

Write yours

Your project entry

[Project name]

  • [What it is or does, in one line.]
  • [What you built or did yourself.]
  • [What came of it: users, time saved, marks, an award. A number if you have one.]

4 blanks in [brackets] to fill.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type here is sent anywhere.

The format

  1. 01

    Heading

Project name, the tools you used, and the team size. The tools are words a recruiter searches for, so use their usual names.

  2. 02

    What it is

One line a stranger understands. “A web app that lets students pre-order canteen lunch”, not “an e-commerce platform”.

  3. 03

    What you did

Your own part, with the tools named. In a team project this is the line that tells your work from your teammates’.

  4. 04

    What came of it

Who used it, what got faster, how accurate it was, what marks or award it won. A number if you have a real one.

Weak vs strong

Campus Canteen Ordering App | React, Node.js, MySQL | Team of 3 • A web app that lets students pre-order lunch from the college canteen. • Built the React front end and the order API in Node.js, with MySQL for menus and orders. • Used by 1,200 students in its first term; the canteen says the lunch queue fell from about 20 minutes to 5. github.com/yourname/canteen-app

The weak one lists tools and hides the work behind “various” and “etc”. The strong one says what it is, what this person built, and what happened.

Questions freshers ask

How many projects should a fresher put on a résumé?

Two to four. Put the one closest to the job first. Three good entries beat six thin ones, and each one is a question you should be ready to answer in the interview.

Where does the projects section go?

For a fresher, after Education and Skills and before Internships, unless the internship is the stronger proof. Once you have a year of work, projects move below experience.

What if my project had no measurable result?

Use what did happen: the marks it got, who used it, how it compared with something else, or what it taught you to do that the job asks for. Do not invent a number; an interviewer will ask where it came from.

How do I describe a team project?

Say the team size in the heading, then write only your own part in the second line. “Built the payment API” is honest; “built the app” when three of you did is not.

Should I add a GitHub link?

Yes, for software and data work, if the repository has a README that says what it is and how to run it. A link to an empty or broken repository does more harm than no link.

Can I list a project from a course or a tutorial?

Only if you changed or added something real, and then say what. A recruiter has seen the same to-do app from the same tutorial hundreds of times.
