Career gap in your résumé, and how to explain it

A gap is a question, not a problem. Answer it before it is asked: one dated line on the résumé, and one short answer in the interview. What happened, what you did, and that you are ready now.

Three rules

  1. 1

    Keep the dates honest

Do not stretch the job before it to cover the gap. Background checks compare dates, and a stretched date costs more than any gap.

  2. 2

Give it a line, not a paragraph

Over a few months, put a dated line in your work history where the gap is. Under three months, leave it; nobody asks.

  3. 3

    Lead with what you did

A course, a project, freelance work, teaching: anything that kept a skill alive. If you did none, say you are ready now and why.

    Questions people ask

Is a gap of one or two years for UPSC or other exams a problem?

Less than people fear: Indian interviewers see it often. What matters is that it reads as a decision, not drift. Say how long you prepared, how far you got if it helps, what you did alongside, and why you are now choosing this career.

Do I have to say why I took a break?

You can keep health and family private: “a career break for personal reasons, now resolved” is a complete answer. Interviewers mostly want to know you are ready now, not the details.

How do I explain being laid off?

Plainly, and without blame: the company cut the team, the office closed, the role was removed. Layoffs are common and say nothing about you. Then move to what you did since.

Should the gap go on my Naukri profile too?

Yes, the same way: keep the dates honest and add a line about the break in your profile summary or as a short entry. A profile with unexplained dates draws the same question as a résumé. BananaJobz is not affiliated with Naukri.
