A résumé for a career change
Say the move in the first line, put your work in the new field above your old job, and rewrite the old job for what carries over. Here is a full sample, from teaching to data analysis.
Four changes from a normal résumé
1
Name the move in the summary
“Mathematics teacher of 5 years moving into data analysis.” Recruiters should not have to guess why a teacher applied for an analyst job.
2
New-field work goes first
Projects, courses or freelance work in the new field sit above your old job. They are your evidence; the old job is your background.
3
Rewrite the old job for what carries over
Keep the bullets that show skills the new role uses: numbers, training, presenting, tools. Cut the ones only your old field would understand.
4
Drop the old jargon
Write “students who were falling behind”, not “remedial cohort”. Every line should make sense to someone in the new field.

Questions people ask
Should I leave my old career off my résumé?
No. A gap where years of work were raises more questions than the work itself. Keep it, shorter, and rewritten for what carries over.
Do I need a course or certificate to switch?
It helps, but a project in the new field helps more, because it shows you can do the work. A course plus one project you can talk about is a strong pair.
How do I explain the switch in an interview?
In three parts: what you did before and what carries over, what you have done in the new field already, and why this role. The experienced interview guide has the answer worked out.
